This beautiful spot is poignantly marked by the, half written while the troops lived and half written by the padre after 163 young lives were lost: ‘The Devonshires hold this trench – The Devonshires hold it still.’ Andy Thompson led us and members of the group read letters and poetry.

The Banqueting Hall at Haddon has been virtually untouched for 300 years, as you can see from this picture of our group on a private visit. Described as ‘the most perfect house to survive from the Middle Ages,’ we shall certainly return, with TLC members, and this time we shall enjoy more time in the gardens.

Standing in the heart of the Circus at Bath, en route to see No 1 Royal Crescent, where we had a private tour around this wonderfully restored house. The Circus has tremendous symbols from the period and from Masonry on all of its buildings, as we learnt from our guide, Dr Amy Frost.

On our way back to England we stopped at the magnificent Chateau Tilques, which we had to ourselves for a very fine lunch. What a relief to see our driver, Mick, enjoying himself with orange juice.
